Speaking to GBC News, Mr. Asuman said the Ghana Airports Company and the Civil Aviation Authority, are mandated by law to pay a percentage of their revenue to the Ghana Meteorological Agency, but the two companies have refused to comply with the law.

He said ”the money is urgently needed for the acquisition of logistics to serve Ghana better, especially during these uncertain whether patterns”.

“Parliament unanimously passed the GMET amendment Bill into law and the Act specifically says that 10 % landing charges that Civil Aviation charges for all Airlines that land in Ghana should be given to Ghana Meteorological Agency.

Again, all flights over Ghana fly zones that ….fly over Ghana, they charge them in whatever money they receive from those charges, 10% should be given to the GMA and then 5% of Airport tax collected by Ghana Airport Company should be given to GMA. Per our calculation since 2019 to date put together, they should be owing us over 80 million Ghana Cedis.”

He added that, “Even though the Act was passed in 2019, these two agencies are not respecting the way it should. They are not complying with it. Infact when we complained … they are not being fair to us”.

“The Airport Company has also given us about GHC2 million. Without complying with the Law, the funding that we need, one radar is over GHC15 million Ghana Cedis and we need about four of them to cover the airspace of Ghana which will help the agency to be able to detect a small spec of a system developing and then analyze it and be able to give necessary warnings and forecast we don’t have that.”

Mr. Asuman appealed to the Sector Minister to call the Civil Aviation Authority and the Ghana Airports Company in order to comply with the law by paying all monies owed the GMet.

“All Ghanaians are expected to be law-abiding citizens. Institutions are legally citizens. They are also legal entities and legal beings and so we expect Ghana Civil Aviation and Ghana Airport Company to also abide by the law that Ghana through parliament has given to Ghana Meteorological Agency and to wish that the entire Ghanaians will appreciate our concerns”.
