A former Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Ambassador Kabral Blay-Amihere, has hinted that he opting to study journalism while he could go and study law, as most of his mates come from the fact that he has always drifted towards the media.

According to him, he used to sell newspapers during his early days in Sefwi-Bekwai, read newspapers, became the editor of his school magazine at St. Augustine’s College, and at the University of Ghana, he also became the editor of the university’s magazine.

So joining the media space was naturally driven because, in life, we feel our destiny. When God created you, he gives you a purpose in life,” he noted on Sunday, August 7.

Ambassador Kabral-Blay-Amihere gave this hint when he appeared on the Bold, the Beautiful, the Ugly, and the Maverick (BBUM) Show, a current affairs programme on GTV.

The former Commissioner to Sierra Leone and Côte d’Ivoire explained that his history teacher at St. Augustine’s College in Cape Coast encouraged and motivated them to read and write. “My history teacher asked us to write on anything and one of my write-ups was published in the Daily Graphic, and that was such an honour for me,” Mr. Blay-Amihere reiterated.

Ambassador Kabral Blay-Amihere was born at Ekwe, a village in the Western Region (Ghana). At age 28, he became the Director of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).

Ambassador Blay-Amihere attended St. Augustine’s College (Cape Coast). He is an alumnus of the University of Ghana, Legon, and the London School of Economics, and is a Nieman Fellow of Harvard University. He was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in civil law by the University of Sierra Leone in 2007.

He was at one time General Secretary and President of the Ghana Journalists Association, President of the West African Journalists Association and executive member of both the Commonwealth Journalists Association and the International Federation of Journalists, a former Chairman of the National Media Commission and part-time lecturer at Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone.
