The ECOWAS Commission has held an Experts’ Consultation Workshop in Abuja, Nigeria to validate the simplified African Union’s Continental Results Framework, on Women, Peace and Security for West Africa.
The framework was developed in response to the gaps in monitoring and reporting the progress of the implementation of the Global Women, Peace and Security, WPS Agenda in Africa.
The Workshop was therefore organized to start the full implementation of the framework on Women, Peace and Security in West Africa, to accelerate the delivery of WPS commitments through systematic, sustained monitoring and reporting by Member States.
Director of Humanitarian and Social Affairs, at the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Sintiki Tarfa Ugbe, said the WPS agenda among others, aims at comprehensively preventing and resolving violent conflicts and ensuring the protection of women’s rights.
According to her recurring and emerging traditional and non-traditional factors including the proliferation of violent conflicts, extremism, pandemics, climate change and other threats to security and stability have impacted women and girls in the region.
She stated that the ECOWAS Commission, Member States, Development Partners and other actors will continue to put in place structures to ensure the realization of the goals of Women, Peace and Security, WPS.
