Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, has called for the media in Ghana to create the space needed for debate and discussion on issues bothering the economy.

Speaking at the 26th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) awards ceremony, organised at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra, Professor Ernest Aryeetey said creating the right space and environment in the media will encourage discourse on national and critical issues.

He emphasied that the media’s role in building the economy cannot be underestimated and urged all media practitioners to live up to their mandate.

“Let’s create a Ghana where ideas and debate flourish” Professor Aryeetey added.

He cautioned against the trend of politically tagging people who share their thoughts on the economy indicating that it is bad for national discourse that will help find solutions to the country’s challenges.

The theme for the 26th GJA awards ceremony was “Walking The Path Towards Ghana’s Economic Recovery: The Role of The Media”.
