Fire destroyed property worth thousands of Ghana cedis at the Koforidua Technical Institute, KOTEC, last night.
The Principal of the School, Bernard Forson said around 11:45 pm he had a call that there was a fire outbreak in one of the dormitories came in. Upon reaching the scene, he realized that the fire could not be doused with the fire extinguisher and called officials of the fire service who responded quickly to save the situation.
Eight of the students who sustained minor injuries were sent to the hospital for treatment.
As an interim measure, the affected students have been housed in a private hostel while investigations continue to ascertain the cause of the fire.
The New Juaben North Municipal Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, DO1 Emmanuel Acquaye, said personnel of the service rushed to the scene immediately after they received the call.
He said they had to call for reinforcement from New Juaben South fire office due to the intensity of the fire before they were able to bring it under control. DO1 Acquaye said the cause of fire is not immediately known and urged the students to remain calm while investigations continue.
The MP for New Juaben North, Nana Adjei Boateng asked the Principal to liaise with the Regional Directorate of Education for some items for teaching and learning to continue. He donated 20 thousand Ghana cedis to the School to help the affected students.
