It’s been about four months of closure following the invasion and attack of an intruder by lions. The Accra Zoo has officially reopened ahead of the festive season. Tourists and patrons can now enjoy nature with the animals there.
Opening the Zoo to the general public, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Samuel Jinapor, urged all Ghanaians and visitors from the diaspora to patronise the facility, particularly students on holiday.
The temporary closure of the Accra Zoo enabled managers of the facility to complete renovation works and upgrade the place. Now the Accra Zoo has CCTV cameras and camera traps, including the lions enclosure, enhancement of lions enclosure with additional third outer perimeter security fence – 5 meters high, construction of new receptive facilities, improved animal cages, mounting of security checkpoints close to the lions enclosure, among others.
All these measures are to monitor and improve surveillance to forestall a recurrence of the August 28, incident, where a middle-aged man was attacked by the lions. The Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission Mr. John Allotey noted that the facility is safe.
With plans in the offing to promote the country’s zoo and ecosystems, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Samuel Jinapor, called on the private sector to partner the Government for this ambitious agenda.
Managers of the facility say, visitors record sheets to the Accra Zoo is 32,000 annually. As of now, the Zoo has a total of 108 animals – monkeys, Antelopes, Birds, Crocodiles, Snakes, Lions, porcupines, Ostrich, Geese, among others.
