The sad story of the twelve school children between the ages of five and twelve years were reported to have met their untimely death whilst travelling to school on the Volta Lake from Atikakume to Wayokope in the Sena East district of the Bono Region.
The sad news was reported on Monday, 23rd January, 2023.
The Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu shared his disappointment on the incident on ‘GTV Breakfast Show’ on Thursday 26th January, 2023 .
He said such cases have been reported for years but no adequate measures have been put in place by the Ghana Education Service (GES), Local Government, Ministry of Transportation, and the Municipal Chief Executives.
“For all this while, I think this is enough for somebody to resign and say, look for this to happen under my watch I think I have to resign”, he said.
He called on leaders and authorities to take action by putting in place measures to forestall any future occurrence.
Bodies of five boys and three girls retrieved from the lake have since been laid to rest.
It is recorded that one hundred people die on the Volta Lake each year.
