The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison has reiterated the need for more public education on the proper handling of the Country’s currency notes.

He urged the National Commission for Civic Education, NCCE to play a key role in the Bank’s “Clean Notes Campaign” initiative which includes helping to educate citizens on the proper handling of the Ghana Cedi notes.

Dr. Addison made the appeal when a five-member delegation, led by the Chairperson of the NCCE, Kathleen Addy, paid a courtesy call on him and Management of the Central Bank to seek mutually-beneficial relationships between the two institutions.

Dr. Ernest Addison said educating the public will be a key area to collaborate. He said some Ghanaians are averse to the use of coins but noted that it is durable and less costly to produce than the currency notes.

This aversion, according to him, has led vendors to price high by rounding off prices which has impacted the Central Bank’s inflation objective.

The Chairperson of the NCCE, Madam Kathleen Addy said the NCCE played a key role in the education and sensitisation of the Ghanaian public during the Bank’s Cedi redenomination exercise in 2007.

She therefore welcomed the proposal to intensify public education on the proper handling of the Ghana currency notes.

She was accompanied by a Commission Member, Lawyer Victor Brobbey, the Acting Commission Secretary, Mrs. Lucille Hewlett Annan, the Director of Programmes, Dr. Imuruna Mohammed and the Director of Finance, Madam Monica Mamattah.
