A high-level delegation led by the World Bank’s Global Director for Education, Dr. Jaime Saavedra is in Ghana to discuss strategic vision for Education in Ghana with the focus on Skills training as well as Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics Education, STEM.
The delegation also paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei-Adutwum to access progress made in providing quality primary education under the Ghana Accountability for learning outcomes project, GALOP, of which the World bank is a sponsor.
With funding and technical support from the World Bank, Ghana has set an example for countries throughout Africa in promoting quality and affordable education from basic to the secondary level. This achievement influenced the introduction of the free SHS policy.
With increased enrolment in schools, adequate investment is required to improve not just access and quality education but parity at all levels.
The visit by the team from the world Bank was to assess efforts made by the education ministry in implementing the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, STEM, courses in some selected Primary and Secondary Schools nationwide.
The Minister for Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum said, there was the need to bridge the gap between primary and secondary education to put Ghana on the map in terms of transformation.
Leader of the delegation who doubles as the Global Director for Education, Dr. Jaime Saavedra said his office will continue to support Ghana in terms of equitable education where boys and girls will have the same opportunity.
The World Bank team later visited the Mantse Tackie Cluster of schools in Adabraka and the Accra High School STEM Centre to get first-hand information on the performance of the project.
Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project, GALOP, is a five-year program tailor-made to provide quality education to about 10,000 low-performing basic schools.
