Two ministers from the Federal Republic of Germany have paid a courtesy call on President Akufo-Addo. The working visit is to seek ways, the Central European country could deepen economic ties with Ghana.
They are the Federal Minister for Economic Corporation and Development, Svenja Schulze, and the Federal Minister for Labour and Social Affairs, Hubertus Heil.
The relations between Ghana and Germany date back several decades, and the visit of the two ministers is for the countries to deepen economic cooperation.
Interacting with President Akufo-Addo, the Federal Minister for Economic Corporation and Development, Svenja Schulze, said the security situation in West Africa has a direct effect on the economy of Ghana. He said Germany is committed to supporting Ghana to ensure that the spillover, particularly in the Sahel, will not have any effect on the country.
The Federal Minister for Labour and Social Affairs, Hubertus Heil, noted that Ghana and Germany have a lot in common, particularly in the field of football. He therefore expressed his heartfelt condolences to the people of Ghana for the tragic passing of Ghanaian international footballer Christian Atsu.
Touching on the Russian-Ukraine war, he commended Ghana for standing on the “right side of history” by condemning Russia for invading Ukraine. Mr. Heil assured President Akufo-Addo that German citizens will continue to do business in Ghana.
In a welcome address, President Akufo-Addo said Germany, over the last decade or two, has been Ghana’s closest European ally, which has been evidenced by the highest level of contact the two countries have enjoyed in recent times. President Akufo-Addo said that the migration problem confronting African countries requires nations on the continent to put measures in place to stem the tide.
The Ministers from Germany will be engaging with their Ghanaian counterparts to develop a strategy to improve relations between Ghana and Germany.
