Director General for the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, GBC, Professor Amin Alhassan has explained that, GBC is not just a media organization but a people rooted in the heritage values of Ghana; therefore, it is a cultural Institution.
Prof. Alhassan, made this statement during his open address at the launch of GBC’s Heritage Month which took place on March 1, 2023 at the forecourt of the corporation. He explained that GBC has gone beyond just a media organization providing the nation with news and information and has become a cultural institution.
“GBC is the foremost cultural institution. We are not just a media organization, we are a cultural institution. Every day within 24 hours, we celebrate what it is to be a Ghanaian because your Ghana Broadcasting Corporation speaks 25 Ghanaian languages within every 24 hours”, he said.
He mentioned that the heritage month celebration by GBC is to help show Ghanaians who they are and who they are becoming and also to portray the identity, values and heritage of Ghana.
According to him, after the launch of last year’s heritage month, the solid Ghanaian content that were shown by GBC Networks, lots of national and concerned stakeholders expressed concerns because they were doubting if indeed the contents were Ghanaian. This he said fully tells that people are only aware of Ghana in Accra and Kumasi. He, therefore, added that, there are diverse cultural values and heritage across the length and breadth of Ghana and GBC will bring it bare to the very eyes of Ghanaians.
He further called for Ghanaians to get used to and appreciate the diversities of the Ghanaian religion, ethnicity, culture and language. This, he added, will help the country reach a level of development if only we celebrate and tolerate. He reiterated the firm stand of GBC’s mandate of portraying the Ghanaian agenda to both Ghanaians and the world.
“…get used to it that the Ghana you know has a diversity we must appreciate and we can only develop when we celebrate this diversity and tolerate the difference”, he added.
