The Soroptimist International Club of Accra has marked its 38th anniversary along with International Women’s Day with the women of the Gbawe community.

The Accra branch of the global organization, Soroptimist International; working together to transform the lives of women and girls over the world, celebrated this year’s anniversary and International Women’s Day under the theme “Together we can make it work”, with the quest of empowering women and girls within the local communities to play their part together in ensuring the transformation of the environment where they find themselves.

Addressing the congregation on the topic of personal and environmental hygiene, the president of the society, Mrs Philomena Otiduah, encouraged the women to “play our part” in ensuring a very hygienic environment for peaceful co-existence.

The Secretary of the group, Madam Pricilla Kortey, revealed that in conjunction with their anniversary celebration, the team is embarking on a community project to provide the Gbawe community with a library, which would serve the educational interests of the community.

The Mantse of Gbawe, Nii Boi Kojo II, who was in attendance, acknowledged the team for their effort of commemorating the day with the people of Gbawe. He further expressed his appreciation for the team’s intended project for the community as he lends out his profound support to the realization of the project.

Soroptimist International Club of Accra (Sl Accra) was inaugurated on 8 March 1985 to carry out the Sl mandate of Educating, Empowering and Enabling the less fortunate women and girls in local communities. The Club, through its volunteer work, the Club has actively contributed to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals by empowering local communities to create their own transformative change.

It has undertaken a number of projects that have benefited a lot of women and girls in less-endowed communities. Some of these projects include sanitation facilities, boreholes, educational materials, school libraries, health screenings, and daycare centers.
