Funeral rites for former Black Stars Player, Christian Atsu, held at forecourt of State House

The final funeral rites for the late former Black Stars player, Christian Atsu Twasam, has been held at the forecourt of the State House in Accra.

President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, and former President John Dramani Mahama were among the key dignitaries present at the solemn ceremony to bid farewell to the football icon.

Christian Atsu died in the devastating Turkey-Syria earthquake that claimed more than 50,000 lives.

In a tribute by the State, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, said the painful loss of Atsu has left indelible imprints on the hearts and minds of all. He added that Christian Atsu will be remembered as one of Ghana’s committed and result-oriented youth and football star.

Well-wishers and sympathizers thronged the forecourt of the State House in Accra to bid farewell to Christian Atsu. The Ghanaian international footballer, until his demise, was playing at Hatayspor in Turkey. The ex-Black Stars player had earlier played for Porto in Portugal, Chelsea, and Newcastle United in England, among other clubs.

In a tribute, Atsu’s family said he has made his mark and will be fondly remembered by all.

His wife, Marie-Claire Rupio, who couldn’t control her tears, said although Atsu will no longer be seen physically, he will always be their guide as he has taken a piece of her with him.

Atsu’s siblings described him as a caring and loving father with a big heart.

A State tribute read by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, said his legacy will continue to live on as he inspired many throughout his short life on this earth.

The Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, Ozlem Ergun Uluesen, read a tribute on behalf of the Turkish government.

A Senior Pastor of Light House International, Archbishop Kwesi Ampofo, said in a short sermon that all must reflect on their lives as no one knows who will be the next to leave this world.

Eight wreaths were laid in honor of the fallen hero. The Minister of State, Mustapha Ussif, laid the first wreath on behalf of the state and the people of Ghana. Other wreaths were laid by the family, his wife, the Ghana Football Association, and others.

Christian Atsu was born on January 10, 1992, at Kyeiamanfro, Kwahu, in the Eastern Region. Atsu will also be remembered for acts of kindness, especially for prisoners and orphans. He is survived by his wife and three children.
