The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG, Samuel Dubik Mahama has sent a warning to those calling him to plead on behalf of companies that owe ECG to stop.
According to him, the exercise by ECG to ensure that its users pay its arrears is to enable equality.
He added that, it is not fair for some to pay for electricity bills while others enjoy without paying.
The Director asserted that it is high time the right thing is done thus companies that owes ECG has no excuse not to pay.
“Please all I’m saying is stop calling me to plead on behalf of people. Stop calling me. The truth is everybody should do the right thing. You have consumed, you haven’t paid, you are racking up a bill. If we don’t stop. you know, then by the time we stop you, you will not be able to pay. And it doesn’t promote fairness. Because if you are on a prepaid meter, you have to pay before consumption, you understand. So what is the other person’s excuse. So please let’s level the playing field. Let’s enable equality be applied”, he stated.
However, he stated that all the calls he has received were not to end the exercise but to plead on people’s behalf.
“I must say expressly nobody has asked me to end the exercise but most of the phone calls are trying to plead on behalf of the people, not to take them off”, he added.
The Director of ECG commended State Owned Agencies especially GBC for co-operating with them and making the exercise a success.
“As I said, with all of this discussion, the state owned agencies have done very well and this was what we tried to eliminate. So we’ve gone ahead with them…I know we can attest in the case of GTV. We’ve had our own conversations. And finally we’ve got what we needed from you and then now we have the commitment”, he added.
The Electricity Company of Ghana started an operation on March 20, to collect money from companies that owes them.
The Managing Director, Samuel Dubik Mahama revealed that electricity users including state owned companies owe ECG a sum of 5.7 billion cedis.
To ensure the payment, ECG has been sending its works across the country.
