Two persons, including an Assemblyman at Damfa in Accra, Charles Kotei, have been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court for illegally selling and installing ECG prepaid meters to customers around Adenta, Damfa, and East Legon.

They have been granted bail of ten thousand cedis each with one surety, who must be a relative and a Ghanaian.

They both pleaded not guilty to two counts of intentionally interfering in the supplier’s distribution system and possessing stolen property.

Prosecution, Paul Asibi Abariga, said in March 2023 the first accused, Foster Moore, allegedly went to a shop belonging to a former staff of ECG and told the Caretaker that he had some prepaid meters for sale.

The Caretaker informed the owner of the shop, who feigned interest and contacted Foster to bring him one. The shop owner then informed the ECG Legal and Prosecution Unit about the first accused’s activities.

Foster  later brought the ECG Meter with Serial Number 141186697 to the complainant to buy, and he arranged for his arrest.

The ECG Meter was retrieved from him and was cautioned.

During investigation, Foster led the police to Damfa and pointed to the Assemblyman as the one who sold the ECG meter to him for 400 cedis. The investigation revealed that the two accused persons had been selling ECG meters around Damfa, Adenta and East Legon and also assisted them to install them.

It is alleged that Foster has been sending threatening messages on WhatsApp to the shop owner, who caused his arrest. He is alleged to have said that aside from tampering and selling ECG Meters at a lower cost, he also sells pistols, so the shop owner should be careful with him.

The Assemblyman mentioned one Atigah as the one who gave him the meter but failed to lead the police to him.

They will reappear before the court on April 27, 2023.
