The Council Chairman of the Ghana Health Service, GHS, Dr. Sefah Sarpong Bediakoh has called for the strengthening of primary healthcare coverage throughout the country. According to him, it will be difficult for Ghana to achieve Universal Health Coverage if priority is not given to primary healthcare, particularly in the rural communities.
Dr. Sefah Sarpong Bediakoh made the call at the first Senior Managers Meeting of the Ghana Health Service, in Kumasi.
The first Senior Managers Meeting of the Ghana Health Service which was held on the theme, “Enhancing Primary Healthcare, Approaches Towards Achieving Universal Health Coverage,” and attended by senior officers of the Service drawn from all the 16 regions.
It took stock of its performance in 2022 and strategized the way forward. Also in attendance were key partners, sponsors and agencies which have been working closely with the Ghana Health Service to improve health outcomes in Ghana over the years.
The Council Chairman of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Sefah Sarpong Bediakoh underscored the need for the Service to strengthen primary healthcare coverage in particularly rural communities to bolster the country’s achievement of Universal Health Coverage.
The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye reviewed some achievements chalked up in the country’s 2022 health performance.
The Minister of Health, Mr. Kwaku Agyeman-Manu announced that Parliament had approved the Vaccines Institute Bill which would pave the way for the establishment of laboratories to locally manufacture vaccines in Ghana.
This would help prevent future shortages of vaccines in the country as witnessed recently in the case of childhood vaccines. Mr. Agyeman-Manu called on all actors in the health sector to step up efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage as a country.
