About 103 farmers to be honoured with the introduction of two new awards

The Minister of State in charge of Food and Agriculture Dr. Nurah Gyiele has said all is set for the 34th National Farmers Day celebration today in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale.

He said this year’s event has an expanded award winner which includes best “Physically Challenged Farmer and best Agro Processor”.

Speaking on Radio Ghana’s Current Affairs Programme, “Behind The News”, Dr. Nurah Gyiele said the new best Agro Processor category is under pin government’s One-District-One-Factory project which is based on Agro Processing.

The Theme for this Year’s event is “Agriculture, Moving Ghana Beyond Aid.”  103 Farmers will be honored.

“We are quite satisfied with what we have done so far.  This year’s event we will say that it has an expanded award winnership which include some categories which were not there before. Particularly now we are going to award the best Physically Challenged Farmer. We also going to award the Best Agro Processor.  We are doing this in light of Government’s one district one factory project.  The one district one Factory is mainly based on Agro Processing.” He Most of the Factories will be Agro Processing Factories.” He said

In all, the Minister said about 103 farmers will be honoured this year.

BACKGROUND:

Ghana Today, December 7, 2018, marks the National Farmers Day 2018.

The event is marked on the first Friday of December each year as a holiday with the Farmers Day Awards which takes place at various districts, regions and the national levels.

The Natonal Event is being hosted at the Tamale in the Northern Region, which marks the 34th edition of the National Farmers Day.

The event honours farmers and fishers for their contribution towards national development. Hundreds of farmers and fishers across the country are expected to be rewarded at various districts, regional and national durbars.

This year, the award events will be marked at the district and national levels. The event is jointly organized by the Ministries of Food and Agriculture and Fisheries and Aquaculture.
