Chief Justice nominee, Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, says Citizenship and Nationality are matters of Law.

She said in some jurisdictions, being born in a country gives one automatic citizenship but in Ghana, being born here doesn’t make one an automatic citizen.

Answering questions during her vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on a wide range of issues, Justice Gertude Torkornoo sought to rationalize the argument about who is a Ghanaian citizen and who is not, and whether acquiring a Birth Certificate gives one an automatic citizenship.

The learned Chief Justice nominee also clarified the controversy surrounding the recent ruling on the Assin North MP by the Supreme Court.

This was after Deputy Majority Leader and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, had entreated Justice Torkornoo to clear the ambiguities about the ruling.
