The Headmaster of Begoro Presbyterian Senior High School, Gerald Manteaw, has made a passionate appeal to non-governmental organisations, philanthropists, benevolent organisations, and residents, home and abroad, of Begoro to help provide them with computers.
He noted that the school has registered candidates who will write ICT as an elective subject in the upcoming West Africa Senior High School Certificate Examination, yet the school has nothing like a computer lab in the school. Mr. Manteaw noted that the government is doing its best for the school, yet the school is lacking some infrastructure development.
In an interview with GBC News at Begoro in the Fanteakwa North District of the Eastern Region during a literacy quiz competition organised by the Nick Otchere Literacy Foundation, NOLF, he further mentioned some other challenges confronting the school.
The Headmaster also complained bitterly about how parents in the area are using their wards who are day students for farming and economic activities, adding that especially on Fridays, which is market day in the area, about 70 percent of the day students absent themselves from school. The reason is that they are helping their parents, and they appealed to the parents to desist from such acts.
The founder of NOLF, who is an author, Nick Otchere, said the aim of the literacy foundation is to help improve the literacy rate of students in the country. He bemoaned the deplorable nature of the student dining hall, which also serves as entertainment, an assembly hall, and a student chapel.
A philanthropist who is one of the organisers of the quiz competition and an NPP Parliamentary Candidate hopeful in the Fanteakwa North Constituency, Gabriel Kese-Yeboah, noted that their reason for organising the competition is to inculcate the habit of reading in the students.
Mr. Kese-Yeboah reiterated that the foundation is seeing how best they can help mitigate some of the challenges facing the school.
