Executive Director, Bureau of Public Safety (BPS), Nana Yaw Akwada, has called for an independent investigation into Police operation, at Bortianor a suburb in the Greater Accra region where a shootout between Police and alleged land guards left five suspected land guards dead.
He said while the BPS is concerned about the activities of land guards and armed robbers, a press statement issued by the Police detailing accounts of events leading to the killing of five suspects raises more questions than answers.
He said the Police in the past have not proven to be truthful, and asked the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior and the Police Council to lend support to the investigation ”if Ghana is serious about growing its democracy”.
Mr. Akwada, said ”people must demand accountability from the Police Service”.
He said, ”practicing policing without intelligence is not only archaic but criminal which has the tendency to undermine legitimacy of governments”.
