The family of the late Professor Ama Ata Aidoo has officially informed President Akufo-Addo of her passing.
One of Africa’s most-celebrated Authors and Playwright died at age 81. As a renowned feminist, she depicted and celebrated the condition of African women in works such as “The Dilemma of a Ghost”, “Our Sister Killjoy” and “Changes”.
She opposed what she described as a “Western perception that the African female is a downtrodden wretch”. She also served as Education Minister in the early 1980s but resigned when she could not make education free.
As a University Professor, Ata Aidoo won many Literary Awards for her novels, plays, and poems, including the 1992 Commonwealth Writers Prize for Changes, a love story about a statistician who divorces her first husband and enters into a polygamous marriage.
A delegation from her family led by Ebusuapayin Kwabena Essandoh informed the President that the late Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo will be laid in state on the 13th of July. She will then be buried in her hometown the following day.
President Akufo-Addo announced a state-assisted burial for the late Professor Ama Ata Aidoo. He said, this is a way of the state saying thank you for her service.
