Seven owners and occupiers of private commercial buildings in Accra, have been arrested for failing to insure their property against fire and allied perils.
The arrest was effected during a distress action undertaken by the National Task Force for the enforcement of compulsory fire insurance.
The Chairman of the Task Force, Joseph Bentor, said the arrest became necessary because the owners refused to comply with the law to insure commercial buildings, despite warnings by the National Insurance Commission.
He appealed to owners of private commercial buildings to insure their property, because the Task Force will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute non-compliant owners.
All owners or occupiers of private commercial buildings are required by Sections 183 and 184 of the Insurance Act 2006, (Act 724) to insure their buildings against fire and allied perils such as collapse, flood, earthquake and storm.
However, many owners do not comply with the law putting them and other users of their property at risk. As part of efforts to ensure compliance, a National Task Force comprising the National Insurance Commission, Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service and Insurance Companies was formed in 2014.
After many warnings to owners who have failed to obtain the compulsory fire insurance, the Task Force embarked on a distress action to arrest persons they described as “recalcitrant” owners.
Secretary to the National Task Force, Kwadwo Appiah spoke about sanctions which will be meted to the arrested persons.
The enforcement exercise took the National Task Force to Achimota, Kissieman and Christian Village, all suburbs of Accra. The exercise will continue till Friday.
