Lawyers for the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson have made another attempt to halt the trial at the Accra High Court.

Lead Lawyer for the MP, Tsatsu Tsikata told them that he has filed an Appeal at the Court of Appeal to Stay Proceedings at the High Court where Mr Gyakye Quayson is standing trial for criminal offences.

The defence has also filed a Certiorari at the Supreme Court for an order of prohibition to restrain the High Court from further proceeding with the case.

Mr Tsikata argued that the prosecution has failed to provide the Defence with all relevant documents it will be relying on for the trial.

He said practice direction makes it prudent of giving those documents before the trial for a fair hearing.  Mr Tsikata submitted that in view of those pending applications before the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, the trial Court should halt proceedings until they are determined.

Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame however disagreed with the Defence.
He contended that the fact that the said applications have been filed do not warrant the court to discontinue the trial.

He said a specific order must be given by the Supreme Court before the trial can be halted.

Justice Mary Yanzuh adjourned to July 18, 2023 to rule on the request by the Defence to stay proceedings.

Deputy Attorney General, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah accused the Defence of using legal means to delay the trial.
Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, Abraham Amaliba also spoke on the matter explaining the processes are on track.
