The Nabdam District Director of Agriculture in the Upper East Region, Mr. Rasheed Imoro, has refuted reports of an invasion of armyworms on maize farms in the Nabdam area.
According to him, the few hectares of land that were affected have been controlled.
“I don’t know where this report comes from that there are fall armyworms on maize farms in Nabdam District. The few that were infested during the season have been controlled. You cannot use some crops that suffered from it to generalise things. Those few crops were also controlled last week, and you can see that the crops are healthy,” Mr. Imoro explains.
There were earlier reports by some media houses that fall armyworms had invaded and destroyed some maize farms in the Nabdam District at a faster rate. But speaking to GBCNews, Mr. Imoro said the report is fallacious and untrue.
He added that their officers are on the ground doing the scouting. He revealed that they build the farmers’ capacities on how to scout, the symptoms of fall armyworm, and what to do when detected. He insisted that they do not have such an issue at all in the District.
“I will like to tell the relevant authority that there is no cause for alarm. Since the beginning of the farming season, all the areas infested with fall armyworms are one hundred and seventy-eight acres. And all have been controlled. So I don’t know how people will go onto the internet and conclude that there is fall armyworm in Nabdam District. It’s not this Nabdam,” he concluded.
