ECOWAS Chiefs to conclude strategic meeting in Accra today

The meeting of ECOWAS Defence Chiefs taking place in Accra enters day two today.

The meeting is expected to come up with a concrete decision on the way forward in the Niger crisis.

Defence Chiefs from about 10 ECOWAS countries are attending the Accra meeting.

Conspicuously absent are Defence Chiefs from Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea, and obviously Niger. On Thursday, the Ecowas Military Heads defended their stance on intervention in Niger, signaling their readiness to proceed if diplomacy fails.

This is the second time in a space of two weeks that the Military Chiefs are meeting to plan restoration of democracy in Niger.

Speaking at the Accra meeting, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, Abdel-Fatau Musah, said if dialogue fails, the standby force is prepared to go into Niger.

International Relations Expert, Dr. Ken Ahorsu, said in an interview on GBC’s ‘Behind the News’ said he expects the meeting to conclude on concrete measures to manage the situation in Niger.
