The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has donated learning materials to some selected schools in the Ashiedu Keteke, Okaikoi South and Ablekuma South Sub Metropolitan Districts to mark “My First Day at School” in the metropolis.
The team visited a total of eight (8) schools comprising, St. Mary’s Anglican Primary, John Wesley Methodist, Aayalolo ‘3’ Primary, St. Mary’s R/C Basic, Martyrs of Uganda R/C Basic, Dr. H. S. Bannerman/Socco, St. Joseph Anglican Basic School and Police Depot Primary School where kindergarten and basic one pupils were officially welcomed to the school.
The tour was spearheaded by the Mayor of Accra, Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey and executed by a team of AMA staff led by a Deputy Director of Administration, Samuel Tutuani, who advised the pupils to remain disciplined, focus on their schooling and respect the elderly in society.
According to him, shaping children to be responsible citizens was a herculean task to enforce, however, the teachers have taken charge of the mantle to train the pupils to suit societal standards, therefore he applauded them for their sacrifice and a good work done.
He encouraged the teachers to be responsive and alert the Assembly when they encounter challenges, impediments or grievances that undermine the success of their work.
He said bringing up children was a shared responsibility and so he called on parents and caregivers to invest in education for the advancement of society.
Head teacher of Saint Mary’s R/C basic school Patience Addy said there was gender parity when it comes to enrolment in the school and expressed unhappiness about the rate at which parents delay in admitting their children to the school.
She thanked AMA for the kind gesture, adding that it would go a long way to serve as a motivation and encouragement to other pupils absent from the school environment.
The donation was made with support from Top Road Stationery Association and Food Tech Limited, producers of Snappy and Number 8 snacks.
