Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, Madam Jean Mensah, says her outfit is not above scrutiny and criticism, but therefore it should be done judiciously to avoid speculation and propaganda.

“We at the Electoral Commission are not above scrutiny. Scrutinise and criticise our work as your role requires. Criticisms liaised with insults and falsehoods should be beneath you,” she said.

She stated this in her address at the 27th Ghana Journalists Association Awards Ceremony. The event, themed “Leveraging Media Freedom To Sustain the Democratic and Security Architecture: The Litmus Test of Election 2024”, was to highlight the key roles of the media fraternity in the coming December 2024 election.

Madam Jean Mensah urged the media to see how pivotal they are as the country approaches its presidential and parliamentary elections and use their platforms to project facts and not propaganda.

She further called on the new cohorts of media practitioners to emulate the works of some great journalists the country can boast of, stressing that recent years have raised concerns about the media using their spaces to share and peddle falsehood.

Madam Jean Mensah also charged Journalists to rise up as custodians of truth while they yearn to attain the level of freedom to operate, using the forthcoming election as a yardstick.
