The final funeral rites for former First Lady of Ghana, Theresa Kufuor has been held at the forecourt of the State House today, November 16, 2023 in Accra.
The solemn funeral ceremony saw some high profile dignitaries from Ghana, Africa and all over the globe gather in Ghana’s capital, Accra, to mourn with former President John Agyekum Kufuor and his family and also celebrate the extraordinary life of the former first lady who many described as a soft spoken, calm and a strong pillar behind the success of Former President Kufuor’s tenure.
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor in his tribute code named; “To my beloved wife, Aba” , acknowledged the instrumental role Mrs Theresa Kufuor played in his life.
“When I was elected to office as the second President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, Aba would play a pivotal but quiet role in shaping key social interventions, such as including the kindergarten stage for all the children of Ghana in the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education policy; the provision of one hot meal a day to primary school children across the nation; the launch of the National Health Insurance Scheme; and the introduction of free maternal care for all,” Mr Kufuor wrote in his tribute.
Parliament of Ghana eulogised the memory of the former first Lady describing her as the “mother of the nation”.
Some dignitaries who graced the occasion were President Akufo-Addo and First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and wife Samira Bawumia, Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, Former President John Dramani Mahama and wife Lordina Mahama, Nigeria’s Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, Vice President of Liberia H.E. Jewel Cianeh Taylor,
Notable Ghanaians included, Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, Asiedu Nketiah, Prof Stephen Adei, Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, Jospng Group CEO, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Members of Parliament, among a host of others.
Former First Lady of Ghana, Theresa Kufuor was given a state burial.
