Former President of Ghana and Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated that his 24-hour economy policy will be a game changer for the Ghanaian economy to the benefit of businesses and employment of the Ghanaian youth.
The Former President, who was a special guest at the 9th Ghana CEO Network Business Cocktail in Accra, assured business owners present that the 24-hour Economy policy will help their businesses stay competitive by reducing operational costs and create jobs for the youth.
Mr. Mahama also clarified that the 24-hour Economy was outlined on page 105 of the NDC 2020 people’s manifesto, derived from the 40-year development plan developed by the National Development Planning Commission during his presidency. However, he alleged that the current government changed it to “Ghana Beyond Aid,” leading Ghana to be perceived as a beggar country.
He emphasized that companies signing up for the 24-hour economy will enjoy a collaborative effort to reduce tariffs per kilowatt-hour for power consumed during off-shift hours at night.
“Legislation will be introduced to support businesses operating 24/7, including considerations for the labor force, tax incentives, and regulations ensuring workers are protected.”
“Financial support will be provided for agro-processing industries and manufacturing companies to boost production, value addition, self-sufficiency, and increased exposure.”
He further mentioned that without an economic revamp, we cannot hope to address our massive unemployment crisis, which is leading the youth to frustration. He called on the business owners to rally behind the agenda and get Ghana working again.
