The first match of the 2023 Africa Basketball Festival saw Ghana beat Togo by 43–32 in a keenly contested game, with tempo erupting from both corners of the team. Ghana, being the host side, were very cautious about losing their grip in their first game.

The Togolese side also had other plans installed in their arsenals as they took control of the game in the early embers of proceedings, forcing Ghana to trail by 8:0 before they gradually crawled back into the game.

Ghana eventually got their heads into the game by surprisingly turning things around in the dying embers of the first quarter by shooting themselves in front to lead their visiting neighbours by 20-14.

An absolutely incredible display from Spintex Night’s star, James Akoto, got the crowd on their feet, cheering his input. His split passes and accuracy in finding the basket were arguably unmatched by the visiting team, which earned Ghana a win by 43-32.

Ghana are in fact ready to retain their trophy, as stated earlier by their coach before the tournament even started.
