The African Cup of Nations opens its doors to Africa and the world in Côte d’Ivoire on 13th January, 2024. As part of preparations for Ghana towards the big tournament, the Executive Council of the GFA sat with the President of the Republic Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to discuss the betterment of the team in the AFCON tournament.
The Executive Council, led by GFA President, Kurt Okraku had a very insightful conversation with President Akufo-Addo which brought together some interesting take home in building our team towards the tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.
President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the hard-work of the Executive Council and encouraged them to do more in bringing Ghana football back to the top after 41 years of a wait for a trophy.
“It’s been forty-one years since Ghana won the Africa Cup of Nations. If my memory serves me right, we have played in a couple of finals in recent times and lost on penalties in 2015. Expectations are very high, so let’s do our best to make this tournament a success;” said President AKufo-Addo.
Addressing the law prohibiting some sponsors from sponsoring football competitions in Ghana, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku pleaded with the President to help scrap off the rule preventing alcoholic beverage companies from sponsoring football competitions in Ghana.
In response to the proposal, President Akufo-Addo assured the Leadership of the GFA that the proposal will be looked into.
He also wished the technical team and the Black Stars to go for gold in Côte d’Ivoire.
