Wearing a suit obviously makes one feel good, confident, and powerful.

It is an exciting feeling to start your ownership off right. But simply getting it home is just the beginning. To ensure this new suit serves you well for years to come and always looks its best, there are a few essential steps you’ll want to take.

Most suit-made materials benefit from professional cleaning done by a quality dry cleaner. Be sure to ask specifically about their suit cleaning methods to prevent any surprises. Only take yours in for cleaning when truly needed—about every 10–15 wears on average.

Never toss it in the washing machine or use solvents. Take the same care measures for ties, pocket squares, belts, and shoes.

Have the suit properly altered. Have the sleeves and waist brought in if needed for a good fit. This minor investment pays big dividends in terms of how polished your suit appears.

Cut the Tack stitching on the sleeve curves, vents, and sometimes across the shoulders. The tack stitching helps keep the suit in shape when hanging in a store, but it is not a design feature. Also, remove the stitching on the breast pockets and side pockets to be able to put a pocket square or items that fit there.
