Ghanaian supporters have debunked allegations of being stranded and threatening to return to Ghana at the ongoing 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast.

Earlier reports from some media outlets said the supporters threatened to leave Ivory Coast because they were hungry and had been abandoned by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, a situation the union affirmed was not true.

The Union said they are satisfied with their stay as they are in high spirits to support the Black Stars to victory in Thursday’s game against Egypt and subsequent games.

Addressing the media in a press conference in Abidjan, the Secretary of the Union, Kassim Awal, said, “The allegations are not true. We did not threaten to boycott matches and our support for the Black Stars”.

He further stated, “Just before our first match, the Ministry came to us to ensure that everyone received our stipend.” Everything is okay. They gave us what was due us. The allegations are not true.”

Black Stars are in Ivory Coast, seeking their fifth title after over a four-decade wait. They are drawn in Group B together with Egypt, Mozambique, and Cape Verde.

Last Sunday, Ghana lost 1-2 in its opener against Cape Verde.

Coach Chris Hughton is looking forward to redeeming themselves when they meet Egypt on Thursday, January 18, at the Stade Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.
