AFCON 2023: Ghana bow out after 2-2 draw with Mozambique

Ghana conceded two late goals to draw 2-2 against Mozambique to exit the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The Black Stars started on a nervy note anxiously searching for a win to redefine their campaign in the tournament.

Striker Jordan Ayew beautifully converted a penalty when Joseph Paintsil was fouled for Ghana to register the first goal in the 15th minute.

Jordan Ayew doubled the lead for the Black Stars via the penalty spot when a strike from Kudus Mohammed hit the hand of Mozambique defender in the box.

Ghana coach Chris Hughton made some changes by bringing on Andre Ayew, Daniel Amartey and Alidu Seidu to preserve the lead but threw it away in stoppage time when captain Andre Ayew conceded a penalty to be scored by Geny Catamo in the 90th minute.

Black Stars once again conceded a last-minute goal in the 94th minute to throw the game to a draw.

Elsewhere, Egypt also drew 2-2 with Cape Verde in the other group game.

The result puts Ghana in the 3rd position with just 2 points behind Cape Verde who finished as the group leader with 7 points with Egypt following with 3 points after drawing all their games in the group.

The exits means Ghana has exited the group phase in a three straight competitions (AFCON2021, World Cup in Qatar and AFCON2023).
