Four firefighters from the Legon fire station sustained injuries when the last floor of a two-storey shop complex collapsed during a fierce fire incident at Westlands, in West Legon, a suburb of Accra.

The Ghana National Fire Service says the fire and the collapse of the building are being investigated.

The Ghana National Fire Service received a distress call on Wednesday afternoon that a building at Westlands, in West Legon was on fire. The Legon Fire Station was the First Responders in the process of dousing the fire.

Four of the firefighters were injured in the process. Two of the fire officers who are in critical condition, are currently on admission at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) at Legon, and are responding to treatment.

They were referred from the Medifem Hospital, a private health facility where they were initially being treated. The other two officers who suffered minor injuries have been treated and discharged.

Meanwhile, Management of the National Fire Service including the Chief Fire Officer – Mr. Julius Kunuuor – earlier this morning, visited the injured officers at the University of Ghana Medical Centre.

They assured them of Management’s full support towards their swift and complete recovery. They also extended their sympathies to the injured officers, their families and the entire firefighting fraternity.
