Twelve persons have been sentenced to life imprisonment for their roles in the murder of Major Maxwell Mahama in May 2017 at Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region.
The twelve are the then Assemblyman for the area William Baah, Bernard Asamoah, Kofi Nyame, Akwasi Boah, Kwame Tuffour and Joseph Appiah Kubi. The others are Michael Anim, John Bosie, Akwasi Baah, Charles Kwaning, Emmanuel Badu and Kwadwo Anima.
Two others Bismarck Abanga and Bismarck Donkor were acquitted and discharged by the Court.
The jury unanimously found the twelve convicts guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, murder and abetment.
At the time of the incident, Major Mahama was the Commander of a military detachment stationed at Diaso to check illegal mining activities.
He was taking a walk through the town when he was attacked and murdered.
During the trial, some of the convicts said they mistook him for an armed robber.
Family of the deceased soldier were in Court dressed in black to witness the proceedings.
Mother of Major Mahama Veronica Addy who could not hold back her tears was grateful that “justice has been served”.
Father of Major Mahama, Captain Dennis Mahama is not happy with the number of people convicted so far. He is hopeful that more people will be arrested and prosecuted for the murder of his son.
Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame cautioned the public against mob justice.
He was hopeful that the conviction of the twelve persons would deter others from taking part in such an offence.
