The Ghana Education Service (GES) has initiated an internal investigation into the death of a first-year student at Aburi Girls’ Senior High School.

Stacy Okyere, who died on on February 5, 2024, was allegedly denied medical attention by the school nurse, who reportedly accused her of feigning illness repeatedly.

In a press statement issued on February 12, 2024, the GES stated that there is an ongoing internal investigation, and the management is also collaborating with law enforcement agencies to independently investigate the issue.

“The Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Eric Nkansah, led a delegation to the school and thereafter to the residence of the bereaved family to commiserate with them,” part of the statement read.

“GES assured our stakeholders and the general public of our continuous commitment to ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for all students.”

The GES also extended its commiserations to the family of the deceased.
