Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has emphasized the importance of peaceful elections and justice for victims of electoral violence.
Speaking at the Assemblies of God Greater Accra East 6th Regional Council meeting, Mr. Mahama pledged to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of eight individuals during the 2020 election in Techiman if elected President.
He assured the families of the victims that he would work to ensure closure and provide compensation.
“When we advocate for peace, we must also advocate for justice, because peace and justice go hand in hand. So, while we call on stakeholders to go about the election peacefully, we must also urge that there should be justice. You all know what happened in the 2020 elections in Techiman … my government will investigate this incident when I come into power next year.”
In his address, the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church, Ghana, Rev. Dr. Stephen Yenusome Wengam, emphasized the need for neutrality and professionalism. He urged all stakeholders to utilize technology and insist on the right procedures being applied during the electoral process.
“It’s not do or die. Every election in Ghana, people will see there are things at stake. Every election is peculiar. What I’m saying is that the Electoral Commission, especially, should be neutral, professional, and ensure that their house is in order. Civil society, churches, religious groups, and all political parties must conduct themselves peacefully and be vigilant.”
Furthermore, the Greater Accra Regional Superintendent, Rev. Andrews Nelson Awintia, highlighted the purpose of the meeting as a time for reflection and accountability.
He stated, “The objective of this meeting is for our Regional Council to assess what the Lord has done for us, with us, and through us. We gather to fellowship, take stock of our regional life, and inform the people of what lies ahead.”
The meeting, attended by pastors, regional directors and departmental representatives, and church members, underscored the importance of utilizing social media to reach diverse audience with the message of the gospel.
The Region honored the former President for his contribution to the church.
