The 13th African Games, dubbed Accra 2023, has officially been opened at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
The event, which is accommodating 54 African countries in 29 disciplines, will be hosted across eight different venues here in Accra, the capital of Ghana.
Even though some sporting disciplines have started with some medals being won, the ceremony held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium officially signifies the opening of the African Games.
In an opening speech, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, His Excellency Moussa Faki Mahama, urged patrons of the game to be ambassadors of unity, tolerance, and teamwork.
He also emphasised the importance of the African Games as one that holds the capacity to develop and prepare elite African athletes for global competitions.
“I urge everyone involved to respect and be ambassadors of Fair play, Equality, Discipline, Inclusion, Perseverance, Honesty, Tolerance and Teamwork,” he said.
President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, also urged the athletes and participants of the games to showcase confidence as they mount the stage of the games. He commended them for their unwavering support during the challenging times and moments.
“To the athletes, I commend your unwavering commitment to the challenges faced. I urge you to step onto this stage with confidence and showcase the power of sports. I believe that your strength will bring hope to the people and unite Africa,” he added.
The event was spectacled with thrilling performances from the self acclaimed African Dancehall King, Shatta Wale, moving fans and spectators with groovy sounds.
