Legendary sports commentator Joe Lartey dies at 96

The demise of Mr. Joachim Awuley Lartey, affectionately known as ‘Joe Lartey,’ has been announced by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG).

The veteran commentator died on Friday, April 26, 2024.

Serving as the association’s inaugural President, Joe Lartey’s impact on Ghanaian sports journalism is unparalleled.

Joe Lartey was instrumental in the establishment and early growth of SWAG, leaving an indelible mark on the field of sports writing, commentating, and journalism in Ghana.

SWAG extends its heartfelt condolences to Joe Lartey’s family and loved ones during this challenging period. Further details regarding funeral arrangements will be communicated by SWAG in due course.

Joe Lartey’s legacy as a trailblazing sports journalist and influential figure within SWAG will be fondly remembered and celebrated by the sports community in Ghana and beyond.

Joe Lartey’s Life of Achievement and Contribution

Born in Accra on June 6, 1927, Joe Lartey began his education at the Accra Royal School before relocating to Tamale with his family. Returning to Accra in 1938, he continued his education at the Government Senior Boys School in Kinbu. After completing his middle school education in 1943, he gained admission to Accra Academy in 1944.

In 1961, Joe Lartey joined the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), where he excelled as a football commentator, forming a renowned partnership with Festus Addae. The phrase ‘Over To You Joe Lartey’ became iconic during his time at GBC. Despite facing challenges, he left GBC in 1973.

Subsequently, he joined the Food Distribution Corporation before venturing into private practice in 1978. Alongside his professional endeavors, Joe Lartey was actively involved in trade unionism, serving as divisional secretary of the Public Service Workers Union for six years.

His commitment to social justice led him to participate in the People’s Movement for Freedom and Justice, opposing UNIGOV under Gen Kutu Acheampong.

He later relocated to Lagos for 12 years.

Returning to Ghana in 1990, Joe Lartey hosted notable programs such as Sports Digest and Hall of Fame on GTV while also teaching public speaking.

Joe Lartey’s legacy will forever be cherished, honouring his significant contributions to sports journalism and his enduring impact on Ghana’s sporting landscape.
