Duty bearers in the Wa East District of the Upper West Region have been asked to redouble their efforts in order to fast-track the socio-economic advancement of the area, especially the District Capital, Funsi.

A group known as South Sissala Unity for Development, which made the call at a news conference at Funsi, indicated that since the creation of the Wa East District in 2004, it has not changed much in terms of development.

GBC’s Emmanuel Mensah-Abludo reports that the group equally urged government officials who have abandoned their duty posts in Funsi and commuted from Wa to work to stop the practice.

Details of the alleged abandoned SOCO project.

A leading member of South Sissala Unity for Development, Alex Jakeri Tuduro, who addressed the news conference, touched on some of the challenges of Wa East, saying, “Our District, the heart of community faces a multitude of pressing challenges that affect the daily lives of every resident, from the deteriorating condition of our roads that hinder mobility and economic activities”.

Mr Tuduro added that lack of a functional fire tender has upscaled the vulnerability of the people and made fire service personnel helpless during emergencies. He also expressed worry about educational infrastructure and other issues.

On health, he pointed out that the Agenda 111 project has also been abandoned. Mr Tuduro was not happy that top government officials have left their bungalows in Funsi and are residing in Wa and called on them to stop the practice.

The stalled Agenda111 Project at Funsi.

In spite of the group taking a strong stand against government officials abandoning their duty posts at Funsi and staying in Wa, it wants a united front from all stakeholders to find sustainable solutions to the challenges of the District.
