The Chiefs, Elders, and the Mepe Development Association have made an urgent appeal to Corporate Ghana and philanthropists to help equip their health facility built for them through acts of benevolence with essential logistics and amenities.
This, according to them, will effectively and efficiently position the facility to better cater for the health needs of victims of the Akosombo dam spillage.
This call for support comes in the wake of the dam spillage, which has left many victims living in unhygienic conditions and still struggling with the aftermath of the floods.
The chairman of the Mepe Development Association, Mr. Kodzo Mawulorm Fabian, highlighted the pressing need for assistance when Sandvik Mining and Construction Ghana Ltd. donated relief items valued at over 120,000 Ghana cedis to the disaster victims.
The items included 100 bags of 25 kg of rice, 100 boxes of Frytol cooking oil, 105 boxes of mosquito coils, 120 cans of insecticide spray, and 720 pieces of 250g of geisha soap. The rest are 1,200 pieces of African wear fabrics, 200 pieces of 10 kg of washing detergents, 320 bars of of key soaps, 50 student mattresses, 50 mosquito nets, 50 pieces of blankets, and four Out-Patient Department (OPD) seating chairs for their health facility.
The Business Line Manager in charge of surface drilling (Boom/Rotary), Mr Daniel Korsah, said the gesture was part of the company’s commitment to supporting communities in times of need. “The societal impact for us to help improve communities in terms of infrastructure and, as people, the community that we operate. Based on what they said, I mean, we will definitely go back and see what else we can do because it’s continuous activity that we do support communities based on the company policy,” he said.
The Chairman of the Mepe Development Association, Mr. Kodzo Mawulorm Fabian, commended the Company for the gesture and noted that the needs of the victims are still immense. He appealed for assistance in equipping their health facility provided them through acts of benevolence to effectively cater for the health needs of victims as part of the restoration process.
“Nothing has been coming forthwith. People are still living in tents. People don’t have food and water and the rest. Ghana Chamber of Mines and the Media Fraternity supported us with infrastructure, as in health facility. The place lacks the needed basic amenities. And we want to use this opportunity to appeal to other institutions and agencies that the people of Mepe are only appealing to their conscience,” Mr Fabian stated.
Prior to making the donation, officials from Sandvik Mining and Construction Ghana Ltd., led by the Logistics & Inventory Manager for West Africa, Mr. Lawrence Baiden, interacted with the community leaders of MMepe,where they were briefed about hife in Mepe before, dduring,and pafter the dam spillage and the disaster.
As the affected communities continue to navigate the challenges posed by the floods, the Mepe Development Association and local authorities are hopeful that additional contributions from corporate entities and philanthropists will help restore and improve the health and well-being of all affected victims.
