The Member of Parliament for the Bawku Central constituency in the Upper East Region, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, has handed over 42 hand pump boreholes to residents in his constituency.

The water projects have been distributed to all the electoral areas in the Bawku Municipality.

According to the MP, this is expected to contribute to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goal 6, of ensuring access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene, the most basic human need for health and well-being.

Access to clean water has long been a significant challenge in the Bawku Municipality due to the prolonged conflict. Much resources from central government have been spent on ensuring peace returns to the area. This compelled the Member of Parliament for the area Mr. Mahama Ayariga to connect residents to some water by drilling the hand pump boreholes.

At a ceremony to commission some of the boreholes at the Kuka community, Mr. Ayariga said the forty two boreholes were drilled within the last five months.

“We have been embarking on a number of projects and the borehole project is one of the last that we emphasized on so that our mothers will not travel far away to access portable drinking water.” “In fact, last week I drilled two more boreholes and they will be fixed soon. So the borehole drilling is an ongoing programme” Mr. Ayariga emphasized.

Residents in the Bugri Corner Electoral Area said they managed to connect their homes to the Ghana Water Company Limited’s supply but faced the challenges of paying the bills. A business woman, Rakia Osman narrated that the boreholes have come to lessen the burden involved in accessing water in the area.

“Everyone here is happy about what honorable Ayariga has done for us. We were crossing the roads before we could get water to our various houses. It was risky sending children across the road to fetch water. Today, we have been saved from the hustles of spending hours and walking long distances to get water” Rakia Osman narrated.

Assembly Members for Kuka and Zabugu Electoral Areas, Ndaog Akubilla and Akuka Mohammed Zakari both commended the MP for relieving them from the water crisis.

The people of the beneficiary communities including Daduri, Wande, Bawkzua, Kutanga, Bugzunde and Sabongari were elated by the kind gesture of the MP and expressed the hope that his support for the communities would continue as promised.
