In a recent interview on the GTV Breakfast show with host Maltiti Sayida Sadick, Awa Ndiaye Seck, a former UN official and international expert on gender, highlighted the significant efforts of the Africa Women’s Leaders Network (AWLN).

Established in 2017 with support from the UN and AU, AWLN is dedicated to promoting the global movement of women across Africa and supporting them in attaining leadership positions, in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Dr. Charity Binka, chairperson of the Ghana chapter of AWLN, elaborated on the chapter’s progress since its launch in 2022. She noted that the Ghana chapter has been pivotal in identifying gaps in women’s leadership representation. A major milestone was the launch of the Youth Parliament on July 6th, which successfully secured a commitment from the President of Ghana to enhance women’s representation in parliament and leadership roles.

“Domestic roles may hamper women’s take-up of leadership positions, but we are getting to the point where young women have confidence in their abilities to go out and still achieve their dreams with the right support,” Dr. Binka added.

AWLN provides a vital platform for women across Africa to engage in meaningful conversations about their development. Awa Ndiaye Seck emphasized that the movement creates avenues to amplify women’s instrumental roles at both the community and governance levels.

In an exciting development, Dr. Binka announced that the President of Ghana will grace the AWLN awards ceremony on July 31, 2024, to honor outstanding women who have made significant contributions to their communities and beyond.

The Africa Women’s Leaders Network continues to be a driving force in the empowerment of women leaders across the continent, fostering a brighter and more inclusive future for all.
