In a recent interview on GTV Sports Plus’s Studio 5 show, sports psychologist Samuel Yawson emphasised the critical importance of mental health awareness in sports. During his insightful discussion, Mr Samuel Yawson highlighted how mental health significantly impacts athletes’ performance and overall well-being, urging for more attention to be paid to this often-overlooked aspect of sports.

Mr Yawson said athletes, like everyone else, are prone to mental health issues, and these can severely affect their performance. He pointed out that the stress of competition coupled with the pressure to consistently perform at high levels can lead to mental distress.

This was evidenced in the case of Rose Yeboah, whose recent performances in the Paris Olympics did not live up to her previous successes, possibly due to mental health challenges.

The sports psychologist made a compelling case for prioritising mental health within Ghana’s sports community. He noted that mental well-being is just as crucial as physical fitness for athletes to excel in their respective fields. Yawson’s comments stress that without proper mental health support, athletes may struggle to cope with the demands of their sport, leading to subpar performances and even long-term health issues.

Mr Yawson particularly emphasised the need to focus on mental health within the senior national team, the Black Stars. Given the team’s immense popularity and the high expectations placed upon its players, addressing mental health could be a game-changer. By incorporating mental health strategies and support systems, the Black Stars could potentially enhance their performance and maintain their competitive edge.

With more attention and resources dedicated to mental well-being, Ghanaian athletes could reach new heights and set an example for the global sports community.
