As Ghana’s health facilities grapple with a critical shortage of blood needed to treat patients with various medical conditions, including accident victims, the role of corporate organisations in bridging this gap has become increasingly vital.

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has stepped up to address this challenge with its annual ‘Insurance Industry Blood Donation Campaign’. The 2024 campaign has since been launched.

The campaign is a collaborative effort between key industry players, including the Ghana Insurers Association (GIA), the Insurance Brokers Association of Ghana (IBAG), the Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG), the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme, the National Association of Ghana Insurance Agents (NAGIA), WAICA Re, and the Ghana Insurance College (GIC), and spearheaded by the National Insurance Commission (NIC).

The blood donation campaign is focused on mainly saving the lives of pregnant women, children with cancer, and accident victims.

At the launch of the 2024 edition in Accra, the Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Mr. Michael Andoh, pledged the commission’s continuous supply of blood to the National Blood Bank. He commended organisations and individuals for patronising the annual blood donation campaign. He called on all insurance companies, brokers, agents and the general public to support this worthy cause.

The Chief Executive of the National Blood Service, Dr. Shirley Owusu Ofori, also encouraged Ghanaians to engage actively in blood donation activities to help improve the health sector of the country.

Deputy Chief of Staff (medical Services) at the Ghana Armed Forces, Major General Raymond Ewusi, also encouraged Ghanaians to take proper care of themselves by going for regular check-ups and avoiding activities that will require the need for urgent blood emergencies.
