The Health Services Workers Union (HSWU) of TUC is celebrating its 80th anniversary, marking its significant role in healthcare since its inception in 1944.
In light of this, the milestone was discussed on GTV breakfast show today September 4, 2024 with the National Chairperson of the Health Service Workers Union of TUC, Mr. Emmanuel Lloyd Bafo and the Head of the Union’s Gender Department of TUC, Madam Harriet Sabour Amponsa.
Mr. Emmanuel Lloyd Bafo indicated that the union was initially formed in Takoradi by hospital workers advocating for their rights, and it expanded across various regions, eventually merging into the Hospital and General Health Workers Union in 1955. It originally represented all healthcare professionals, including doctors and nurses, until separate associations for these groups were established after government intervention, leaving the HSWU to represent a wide range of other healthcare professionals. And today, the HSWU represents over 100 categories of healthcare workers, including biomedical engineers, lab technicians, mortuary attendants, and disease control officers.
Madam Harriet Sabour Amponsa also emphasized that these workers, though often unrecognized, are crucial to the smooth operation of healthcare services. They perform essential functions, such as maintaining medical equipment, promoting public health, and ensuring sanitation, which are vital to quality care.
She pointed out that one of the union’s biggest challenges is the lack of recognition for these diverse roles. Many people assume that only doctors and nurses work in hospitals, which diminishes the visibility and importance of other healthcare workers. This underappreciation often leads to disparities in working conditions and benefits, which the union actively seeks to rectify. “Through events like the HSWU Week, the union raises awareness of these professions and advocates for equal treatment and recognition from employers and the government”.
She highlighted that as part of its 80th-anniversary celebrations, HSWU has organized health talks, cleanup exercises, and education sessions to highlight its members’ contributions.
Additionally, the union is launching a mutual fund for its members, which includes a Tier 3 Provident Fund aimed at supporting members in times of need and ensuring a secure retirement. And the HSWU continues its commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of its members while emphasizing their critical role in healthcare delivery.
