Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, have fallen to the 70th position in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday, September 19, 2024. This marks a significant drop from their previous 64th position, signaling a troubling period for the team. The recent rankings place Ghana 14th in Africa, underscoring a challenging phase for the football team that once basked in glory and high expectations.

The Black Stars’ decline can be attributed to a series of disappointing performances in September, where they played two disappointing AFCON qualification games against Angola and Niger, which have left fans bewildered. The team’s lacklustre showing in recent matches has raised concerns about its tactical approach and player morale. The once-dominant side now finds itself grappling with the pressing need to rebuild and regain its former stature on the global football stage.

Adding to the woes, Ghana has been hit with a ban from using the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, the only CAF-approved venue in the country. This ban has further complicated matters for the national team, as they struggle to find a home ground that meets the Confederation of African Football’s standards. The absence of a standard stadium has undeniably contributed to the team’s dwindling performance, as they are forced to play without the advantage of a certified home ground.

The fall in rankings and the stadium ban have sparked a nationwide debate on the future of football in Ghana. Critics argue that the current state of affairs is a result of systemic issues within the National Sports Authority (NSA), and Ghana Football Association (GFA), including mismanagement and lack of investment in grassroots development. Fans and pundits are calling for immediate reforms and a strategic plan to restore the Black Stars’ glory and ensure sustainable development in the sport.

Despite the grim scenario, there remains a glimmer of hope among the loyal fanbase. The recent setbacks could serve as a wake-up call for the GFA and the entire football community in Ghana. By addressing the root causes of the decline, investing in youth talent, and improving infrastructure, there is potential for the Black Stars to rise again and reclaim their position as one of Africa’s football powerhouses. \
