The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has revealed that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is considering Ghana as the next host for the prestigious CAF Women’s Champions League.
In a recent address to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Ussif disclosed that CAF reached out to the ministry to explore the feasibility of bringing the tournament to Ghana. He emphasized that Ghana’s candidacy for hosting the event is strongly supported by the country’s robust sports facilities, which have been instrumental in drawing CAF’s interest. “CAF wrote to us, expressing their interest in having us host the Women’s Champions League,” Ussif stated. “This is because they have seen that we have the necessary facilities, thanks to what we achieved during the African Games.”
The CAF Women’s Champions League, which was introduced in 2021, has quickly established itself as a cornerstone in African women’s football. The tournament has previously been hosted by Egypt, Morocco, and Côte d’Ivoire, each contributing to the growing prestige of the event.
Hosting the CAF Women’s Champions League could have myriad benefits for Ghana, from boosting tourism to fostering local investment in sports. It would also offer a platform to inspire young athletes and promote gender equality in sports. The decision by CAF to consider Ghana is a testament to the country’s dedication to enhancing its sports infrastructure and its commitment to the development of women’s football.
