Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, John Dramani Mahama has openly criticized the recent decision to remand Democracy Hub demonstrators for two weeks, labeling the move as an abuse of their rights. Mr. Mahama took to his social media platform, X, to express his concerns, emphasizing the importance of balancing law and order with the protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms.
Mahama described the remanding of the demonstrators as “high-handed” and an infringement on their rights. He highlighted the significance of the youth’s role in engaging in protests to safeguard their future, particularly against critical issues such as environmental destruction caused by illegal mining. According to Mahama, such severe judicial decisions are unlikely to deter the youth from voicing their concerns.
The former president urged the authorities to reconsider the remand decision and called for immediate bail for the detained protesters. He stressed that the judicial system should not be used as a tool to suppress the voices of those who are striving to protect their environment and future. Mahama’s statement sheds light on the tension between maintaining public order and upholding democratic freedoms in Ghana.
The Democracy Hub demonstrators were involved in a three-day protest aimed at raising awareness about the adverse effects of illegal mining on Ghana’s environment. The protest, which drew significant attention, highlighted the urgent need for action to combat environmental degradation, illegal mining and promote sustainable practices.
As the debate continues, Mahama’s strong stance underscores the need for a careful and balanced approach to addressing civil disobedience while protecting fundamental rights.
